Eger, the thousand year old Episcopal seat is one of the most beautiful historical Baroque towns in whole Hungary, a regional center in the Northern Mountains, situated at the meeting point of Mátra and Bükk mountains.
The town is the symbol of heroism, its inhabitants are very proud of the historical past: in 1552, the people of the Eger Castle, commanded by captain István Dobó, held out with much success for a month against the twenty times greater Turkish forces.
Eger is a wine "capital", it is the center of one of the oldest historical wine regions of the country. The famous wine marks, red wine Bull Blood of Eger ( Egri Bikavér ) and white wine Litlle Damsel of Eger ( Egri Leányka ) are produced in this region.
Eger, the archiepiscopal center has the third largest church in Hungary, with the largest organ in the country. In the building of the Lyceum, situated opposite to the Cathedral we can found one of the most important library collections of the country with about 130.000 volumes.
